My name is Letizia, I’m italian and I had a very normal upbringing for an italian kid: state school, holidays at grandparents (who lived by the seaside, if this is not luck, what then?) and many, many, books. However I had this idea I wanted to travel, see the world, learn things (yes, the books probably had something to do with it). I haven’t done a tenth of the things on my list, which is good, because it means I still have plenty of room for day dreming. However I did a few, and that’s how it happens that today I speak English, French, German, Spanish and Portuguese, I have lived in few places in Europe and I like to think of myself as a typical European citizen.

In autumn 2007 A. was born, and I returned home. I decided to raise him bilingual and started to speak, read and sing in English as much as possible, i.e. always. I also started a small English Playgroup. I find that raising a bilingual child is absolutely fascinating, but I always struggle with so many questions and doubts. That’s why Bilingual For Fun is here, it’s the story of a journey, which I want to share with fellow travellers because this way it’ll be much easier. You are most welcome on board!

On this blog you’ll find quite a few things about me as a mother. But if you want to know something about me as me, here are some hints:

25 random things about me

  1. 5 of my favourite books: Blindness by Saramago, The Life and Times of Lucrezia Borgia by Bellonci, Cassandra by Christa Wolf, Everything is Illuminated by Safran Foer, Persepolis 1 and 2 by Satrapi.
  2. Something I regret, Herbie Hancock has been playing at least 4 times in the city where I was living (3 different places) and I never managed to see him.
  3. I once won a salsa context (put this way it sounds like a much bigger thing than it actually was though).
  4. The year that truly changed my life has been the year I spent in the UK on Erasmus.
  5. I took guitar lessons when I was young, but I needed a digital tuner to tune the guitar… I realised soon enough it wasn’t for me.
  6. I love spinning. I had to stop, but I really loved doing it. I do some yoga and swimming now.
  7. Jam, hmmmm. Jam is sooo good!
  8. I’d like to learn a non Indo-European language. At this stage of my like it doesn’t seem very likely to happen, but you never know.
  9. Much as I like the concept, I don’t particularly like green tea’s taste.
  10. I wear glasses, no contact lenses.
  11. I’ve been pretty nasty to my younger brother until he grew to be bigger than me. Now we are very close.
  12. One of the funniest things I ever did was a two day Improvisation seminar, highly recommended to anyone.
  13. One of the few moments of truth in my life happened during a maths class: mathematics is the language to describe the beauty of the universe.
  14. Most relaxing holiday ever was a sailing trip in the Greek islands, I really hope I’ll have another chance in the future.
  15. I like to dress up although I seldom have a chance. Best disguise ever was at an Halloween party: something between a Vampiress and Margherita (as in the Master and Margherita, by Bulgakov).
  16. I wish I could draw. I have no skills whatsoever in that field, while my brother is an artist.
  17. I regret I never worked as a bar tender, I believe this job can teach you a lot about people.
  18. It never crossed my mind the idea of running a marathon.
  19. I don’t particularly believe in zodiac, but as a matter of fact quite a few of my closest friends are Libra.
  20. Dolphins aside, my favourite animals are the Puffins.
  21. I don’t understand why Europe, and the world, don’t take a firmer stand on Italy (it’s embarrassing, but true).
  22. I once sat for more than one hour in front of a blossoming Iris, watching his petals opening little by little. I found it fascinating.
  23. I don’t have a TV and I hate commercials, but when I go to the cinema I actually like to see the commercials too, I often find commercials that run in cinemas of high quality and rather interesting.
  24. I can roll my tongue. I learnt it’s a genetic thing, you either can or can’t. I can, but can’t make any use of it, set apart entertaining children.
  25. I wouldn’t advise anybody to invite me over unless they mean it. I might show up a couple of years later, but often enough I do show up.

1 thing about you

I really thing you should watch this movie, and show it to your kids to…: HOME
