You know after writing the post I realised myself how important it is this point on motivation (i.e. child's motivation being different from the parents'), it's so easy to take for granted kids will do what we say because we know what's best for them... Agreed - passive bilingualism is still a great achievement (that children can build on later in life if they so choose), and motivation is so important (parents' motivation may differ from kids' - have to give them a reason to see the language applied and want to use it).
